The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results
How To Change Your Focus and Improve Your Life
The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results by Gary Keller with Jay Papasan is nothing short of a pure masterpiece. This book will get you to think about your goals, it will get you to challenge yourself on a daily basis, and it will lead you towards achieving your one thing and living an extraordinary life.
Oddly enough, it isn’t meant to get you to thinking about accomplishing more in life, or telling you to chase after each and every single thought that comes to your mind. It’s actually quite the opposite. It’s meant to get you to focus on one thing and one thing only.
There is only one question that you need to be asking yourself on a daily basis. That question: “What’s the ONE thing that I can do today, such by that doing so, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”
Here are a few major takeaways from The ONE Thing.
How To Achieve Extraordinary Goals
Now, I don’t know about you, but I have a tendency to think… like a lot. Often times, my habit of overthinking about the things that I desire becomes enough to overwhelm me to the point where I don’t even know where to begin. So, like most, I don’t. My desires remain the same, but the more that I think and the more overwhelmed I become, the less I actually believe in my ability to achieve the things that I desire.
That’s where the ONE Thing comes into play. The key to finding success isn’t to overwhelm yourself to the point where you don’t even get started. The key to finding success is to dissect your ONE Thing down as small as you can and go from there.
It is said that the best way to achieve big goals is to take small steps. If you really want to find success, then you need to be willing to go as small as you can and slowly build up to your ONE Thing. Don’t know where to start? Ask yourself “What’s the one thing I can do today, such by that doing so, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”
The Importance of Time Blocking
In order to master a skill, you need roughly 10,000 of quality practice. This isn’t just 10,000 of mediocre effort. This is 10,000 hours of uninterrupted practice in which you continue to challenge yourself each and every step of the way.
Through this, there are going to be many distractions that are going to try and consume your time and attention. This isn’t to say that you should ignore everything in life that isn’t going to benefit you, but you should set aside some uninterrupted time for you and only you where you can be free from any distraction.
Start by setting aside four hours per day to focus on your ONE Thing. It might seem like a lot of time, but remember that if you want to master a certain skill, you need 10,000 of quality practice. At four hours per day, that is still 2,500 days. Yeah, believe it or not, goals require a lot of time and dedication.
During whatever time you give yourself, try your best to remove all distractions. Turn off the TV that is playing in the background, shut off your phone for a few hours, and push all other tasks to later in the day. Focus on your ONE Thing and strive to improve each and every second during your time block.
Purpose, Priority, Productivity
How do you live an extraordinary life? By living life with a purpose. Don’t go through life trying to “find” your purpose. Instead, go through life and create your purpose. Determine how you want to live your life and go create it.
From there, it’s all about prioritizing your purpose. Make yourself your own number one priority and focus on you before focusing on anything else. If you want to achieve extraordinary goals, then you need to be willing to focus on yourself before you can start to focus on others. Prioritize the thing that you can do today that will help to set yourself up for success tomorrow.
When talking about priority, Keller says, “While we may pull from the past and forecast the future, our only reality is the present moment. Right NOW is all we have to work with. Our past is but a former now, our future a potential one.”
Lastly, productivity. Be as productive with your time as possible. If you finish a goal early, move onto the next one. If you can’t stay organized, get a planner. Maximize your time and get as much done as you can. Time blocking will help you do this. Instead of only trying to get one task done, try to get as many tasks done within your time block.
“Putting together a life of extraordinary results simply comes down to getting the most out of what you do, when what you do matters.” — Gary Keller
Honestly, I would give this book a 9.5 out of 10. If you are looking to change your life, accomplish massive goals, and achieve extraordinary results over the course of your life, then this book is for you. It will help you to eliminiate distractions as well as to help you focus when you are feeling overwhelmed.
Remember, focus on your ONE Thing, and prioritize what you need to do today, such by that doing so, everything else will be easier or unnecessary.
